Philippines Update #1

Sorry for the delay!

We arrived in Word of Life Seaside on Thursday afternoon after 3+ days of travel! – All went well with plenty of time to explore Doha (Qatar) airport. We spent Wednesday night in Manila. We had plenty of torrential rain in Manila which resulted in wet clothes and a rain delay for our flight south to Mindanao.

Friday was a work day. We cleaned off all the outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, painted lines and poles, created a new grass volleyball court, and in general made the camp ready by doing whatever the camp director needed.

Saturday morning we led a basketball clinic that meets every Saturday morning at 6AM – The kids were showing up just after 5 ready to go! After an almost 3 hour clinic, we had breakfast and headed for the mountains. We got to experience the roads and rural surroundings going through village after village on windy roads. Driving rules are optional and many “exciting” experiences were had. In the mountains, we went to an “Activity Park” that had zip lines and an alpine slide. Lots of fun and laughs as we spent the day together with several WOL staff. On the way back to Seaside, we stopped at a mall, where we ate at a Filipino buffet. Some were more adventurous then others but all had opportunity to sample Filipino cuisine.

Sunday, we went to two different churches, where Tim gave the message and Andy Kmiec gave his testimony at one of the churches. While teaching, there were plenty of new sounds rarely heard at Calvary Church. A cat walked in, a bull frog croaked, and several other unidentified noises made for a good experience for all. After lunch, camper staff arrived, mostly students, and much basketball and volleyball was played until dinner. We sat apart with the staff and had a great time getting to know each other and finished the dinnertime with a time of prayer for the camp and each other. And then, of course, more volleyball and basketball, needless to say, all slept well.

Today (Monday morning) more camp prep as the campers arrive today. Pray for good attitudes of servant-living, as we get used to “adjustable” schedules. Flexible and adaptable are certainly the most used encouragements.

Thanks for your prayers and look forward to more routine reports this week!
