Philippines Update #2

Good Morning and Good Night!

We are exactly 12 time zones ahead of you. It is 5:45AM at the camp here and so, it is 5:45PM there in Lancaster. The camp crew is already hard at work, cleaning the camp, making breakfast and preparing for the day’s activities. There are about 30-40 young adult volunteers who come and serve this week. The days start early because it is by far the coolest and the most weather-enjoyable part of the day. By 8:00AM, temperature and humidity are in the 90s and will stay there until after we go to sleep. Sweaty clothes are the norm.

Yesterday, the campers arrived. There are seven basketball teams and two maybe three volleyball teams. The potential for more to come is always a possibility – flexibility and adaptability are always the rule of the day. Each team is to bring half of their team members that are not Christ-followers.

Last evening, was the introductory Bible session where our team did a skit and the camp crew “choir,” beautifully lead us in worship. It was followed by a presentation in Tagalog. Praise the Lord! two campers accepted Jesus. Word of Life will follow up as they are very intentional about discipleship. Each day has two Bible sessions and so we are praying for more decisions to follow. After all, the name of the camp is “No Bible – No Basketball.” Praise God for the strong intentionality built into the program to reach unbelievers for Christ.

There was also the first informal women’s volleyball game and the first “formal” men’s basketball game. The intensity of the youth in basketball is obvious as they run incessantly up and down the court with no regard to the heat. The volleyball game, like most of life here was filled with consistent laughter. It’s impossible to miss that “laughing” is very much a part of Filipino culture – not a bad characteristic to have!

We are looking forward to a full (and hot) day of games and bible sessions. Pray for stamina and good attitudes – for the many campers who do not know Jesus (the area is about 25% Muslim and the rest majority, nominally Catholic. Also pray for continued good health – remarkable all are doing well with only a little bit of carsickness and one sore infection.

Thanks for your prayers!
