Philippines Update #3

Tuesday was an overcast, gray day… Praise the Lord. Being in the tropics and in the rainy season, it was a blessing to have a full day without rain and without the very hot sun. Basketball and volleyball started early and we had full day of games.

Bible times in the morning and night have been meaningful to our sports teams. Most of them are quite attentive. The staff of the camp did a “mime” skit that highlighted Jesus taking on our sin and providing the way to redemption through the cross and resurrection. It was beautifully done and certainly provided a clear message.

There was another invitation at the end of the evening session and about 20 teens raised their hands, who then were escorted aside by the staff to have a deeper conversation. It was a blessing to be a part of the session and see God moving among the youth. It is a joy for us to observe the significant intentionality to not only see the kids saved but to begin a discipleship process. The heart for ministry is obvious here at Word of Life Philippines. Pray for deeper commitment and for fruit in these young lives. Pray for the many staff who are deciding how to spend their lives, may they continue to seek God for direction.

One humorous side of the games is the announcer for the basketball games. He openly admits he is enjoying the “development” of his English. The provided dialogue is nonstop and frequently funny. It is a good reflection of the Filipino culture – lots of laughter, fun and encouragement, something we can all learn from.

Another interesting development is the technical foul given for “using bad words.” I wonder how many NBA players would be ejected in the first five minutes with that rule!

It started to rain last night as the games ended and is still raining this morning – challenging our schedule as both the volleyball and basketball courts are outdoors. Our flexibility and adaptability will be challenged today! Pray for good solutions, attitudes, and for God’s love to show through the rapidly-developing relationships that soon will be separated ☹
