Day 4

Sunday! We had a leisurely morning and left for church at Kabarack University (KU,) a little before 10AM. Upon arriving at the church, Tim worked with the sound team to prepare for his message to be delivered that morning. In the true spirit of cross-cultural ministry, it was determined that Tim’s computer was not going to work with their system and so quickly an alternative method of using his PowerPoint presentation was made. This was pretty important as in Tim’s usual style of presenting, it relied heavily on visual connections. At 10:33 (service start time was 10:30) it appeared all was ready, however, there was no time to preview. The service was 2 hours long and included a choir of children from the week of VBS who sang and did a skit, the Kabarack Youth Choir, and a special number from a duet that included the president of the University’s wife and Andrew Onguka’s Aunt. After an inspiring time of prayer and singing, Tim and the team were introduced by Andrew and then Tim delivered the message. With the slide show on one computer and Tim’s notes on another computer, the message was delivered with a few hiccups but none-the-less was received by the congregation. Tim spoke on the importance of the church to be on a journey as a sending church with the world’s need for the message of God’s love, Jesus.

After the service, the team had “Tea” with the University President, the University Provost, the Pastor of the church, the music director, and Andrew’s Uncle. It was a wonderful time hearing about the university and the upcoming mission’s trip that KU would be sponsoring. We returned to the campus and spent the afternoon doing a little more prep work but generally relaxing, Several rested, Kim and Tim took a long walk around the cornfields and cow pastures that surround OneLife Africa’s campus. Of course, Tim took some pictures of some really beautiful birds. They were escorted by Jonathan’s dog who insisted on walking about 20 yards ahead of them.

At dinner, we were delighted to be surprised by Bishop Abraham, who had arrive with 4 Sudanese young adults. Bishop Abraham was one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” featured by 60 minutes and, some of you may have seen, a movie documentary entitled “The Lost Boys of Sudan.” This documentary is a great story of what life was like for 4 Sudanese refugees accepted by the US (go watch it if you haven’t seen it!) He came to know the Lord in the US and has since returned to Southern Sudan where he has started many churches over which he know presides as Bishop of the Anglican church in Southern Sudan and Northern Kenya. His story was full of joy and sorrow and was a great inspiration to us all. He challenged us as Americans to be true to the God that we say we trust on every piece of money. A sobering reality of the contrast that we face as we too often trust the money and not our God.

After dinner, we met with about 20 or so attenders who had already arrived for Lead Right. The team was introduced and then those attenders who already arrived were introduced. We went over the schedule for Monday and then had a short time of worship followed by a time of interaction. Everyone was ready for bed and after a few minutes of last minute preparations and prayer, we went to bed for some much needed sleep around 11:30.
