We finished up our sessions with the university students yesterday and celebrated with a banquet last evening. Lots of Kenyan food -- starting with rice, chapati (like naan bread), some kind of chicken dish, maybe beef, probably beef soup, some veggies, etc. Desserts are non-existent.
All of our meetings (including the banquet) are on the 4th floor -- 55 steps of uneven heights -- at least 3 times every day. Add to that 6200 ft. altitude and Margaret and I have done a good share of huffing and puffing. 😕
Anyway, just after the banquet was cleaned up and good-byes were being said, the lights went out. So down the 55 steps in the almost dark for the last time (cell phone flash lights helped). Turns out it was a nationwide blackout, still in effect today, cause still being investigated.
This morning we left Kabarak at 9:00 for the 4 hour drive to Naboisho Conservancy for our mini-safari. Traffic was much better than it was between Nairobi and Kabarak last Friday. We were transferred to an open air safari vehicle to go into the Conservancy and before we even reached the lodge we saw: elephant, zebra, gazelle, impala, ostrich, wildebeest, hippo, topi, and several kinds of birds. After a delicious lunch, we went on a 4:30 drive and saw a pride of lions, mongoose, and additional groups of many of the animals listed above. It has been amazing!
Margaret and I are sharing a "tent" -- quite an upscale setting actually. Now we're ready for bed, with some kind of cooing noises outside. We'll get up early tomorrow for a 6:15 departure to see more wildlife. Then we head to the Maasai village of one of our students, and return to the lodge for a late lunch. A night drive is scheduled for tomorrow evening. We'll go out again on Monday morning, then head for Nairobi after lunch. We'll stop at 1 or 2 places for some souvenir shopping and then to the airport for our 11:59pm flight. We're having a wonderful time. Thanks for your interest and encouragement.
