Day 2 of English camp at the Haven was a success! Today, 39 campers learned more about their home country of Afghanistan, and they shared many stories and facts about Afghanistan with the camp staff. Many campers were brought by van to camp, while others walked. When the children arrived, each child came up with an adjective to describe themselves that starts with the first letter of their first name. They then introduced a partner to another group. In their English lessons, students learned vocabulary relating to Afghanistan and learned English phrases in order to describe their home country. Students were encouraged that they are the hope and the future of Afghanistan, and the future is bright! Students started mosaic coasters and learned to draw grapes, pomegranates, and cherries during craft time. The children had a lunch of burgers and fries and then enjoyed music and a storybook. In the afternoon, students played the national game of Afghanistan, Buzkashi. Buzkashi is a game in which riders on horseback attempt to place a goat in a goal. In our version, some of the children or leaders became horses, other children were the riders, and the goat was a stuffed animal monkey! It was entertaining and fun! Before the van ride home, campers played categories. They needed to come up with a country, an animal, and an action for all of the letters in the word ENGLISH! Once again, the children left happy and ready to come back tomorrow to learn about their new home state of Pennsylvania.
