We had a great day learning about emotions in Day 6 of our Lancaster ESL Camp at the Haven. To start the day, the team prayed for each child in groups and shared scripture. Once the children arrived by van or walking, we played 20 questions. They had to think of an animal, thing, or plant and then had 20 yes or no questions to figure out what it was! In English class, the students learned different emotions and were able to explain the different emotions that come with being a refugee. Each age level and English level participated in different activities in order to learn English emotion words and express their stories and emotions. In art class, the students finished their farm scene and painted a forest scene. After a lunch of chicken nuggets and chips, the children enjoyed listening to the story of "My Two Blankets" which explains the various emotions refugees experience when learning English and coming to a new culture. The book reminded us that moving to a new country is hard, but friends make it easier! The students then enjoyed music time and continue to learn American songs. Their favorite songs are the ones with motions and movement! In gym time, the students learned how to play the great American past time of wiffle ball/baseball. The children loved hitting the ball and running around the bases! To finish our time together today, the students decorated a folder which will have all of their beautiful artwork and English work from camp. While the students were decorating, they had a special performance from one of our teachers! She played her violin and then students talked about what emotion the song made them feel! We have two more days of camp left, so please continue to pray that we finish well and that the students may see Jesus in the camp leaders. We pray that our work would plant seeds in their lives and that the God of the harvest would reap the harvest of our planted seeds.
