Day 5: Afghanistan Past and Present

Another great day at camp has come and gone! Today, 40 campers learned about Afghanistan: Past and Present. They learned about the journey from Afghanistan to Pennsylvania. We were able provide a safe environment for students to share their stories and emotions. To begin the day, the team shared scripture and prayed as a team. Once the children arrived by van or walking, the groups participated in a selfie-scavenger hunt. They had to take funny selfies as a group, and the results were hilarious. In English class, the students learned about Afghanistan, the United States, and the differences and similarities between the two countries. During craft time, the students wrote a thank you card to the farm from last week and created a farm scene with a barn. The students enjoyed traditional Afghan rice and beans for lunch and then enjoyed music time. We then read the book, "Four Feet, Two Sandals" which explains the refugee journey of two young Afghan girls. Many of the campers found similarities from the story to their own stories. During gym time, the students learned traditional American playground games including four square, under/over, kickball, and SPUD. Before van rides home, the children enjoyed ice cream cones! Yum! Please pray for our team of volunteers. Several team members are not feeling well. Pray for good health and perseverance for the team so that we can continue to shine Jesus's light into these campers lives. Please pray for the campers as they return tomorrow to learn about emotions and emotions that come with being a refugee. Pray for softened hearts and supportive team members to help the campers explain their emotions in a safe environment.
